Solar Film - Ceiling Insulation
Solar Film
Window tinting reflects a huge amount of solar heat and glare, but
allows enough light through making your home or office environment,
comfortable and easy on the eyes. The glare and solar heat is harmful to
your office carpets, fabrics and furniture as well as for the people
working in it. Solar film will stop solar energy from entering your
windows through the glass and radiating around the room. Adding solar
film to your windows is a highly cost effective way to control your
office power consumption and reducing your carbon footprint.
Solar Film – Solar Control
The employer is responsible for a comfortable working environment,
and installing solar film will increase effectiveness and productivity
of your staff. Eye-strain, heat fatigue and migraines are caused by
inadequate solar control. Using solar film on your windows will
drastically improve this.
Solar Film – Ceiling Insulation
South Africa’s current power crisis is pushing to reduce energy and
save power consumption, installing a solar film is an excellent way to
help reduce energy transmitted into homes and buildings. Ceiling insulation like think pink aerolite also
have a huge impact on a building. Solar energy comes through the roof
and windows, and if we can eliminate both those entrances, our homes and
building will be a lot more green. By installing ceiling insulation you
can reduce 35% of energy loss through the roof. Solar film and ceiling
insulation work best when used together, keeping you cooler in summer
and warmer in winter and maintain a comfortable temperature in your home
or building all year round. Be part of the solution with our energy
crisis and help South Africa go green! Read more here on different ceiling insulations.
By using solar film you can drastically reduce the temperature in a
room or office that has large glass windows. People enjoy the view out
of windows at the office but not the glare and solar heat that comes
with it. Having large windows at your office means more solar heat and
glare to deal with, which puts pressure on the air-conditioning units to
cool down the room but only solves half the problem because the glare
is still causing eyestrain and fatigue and making the office environment
uncomfortable for everyone. There are a wide variety of solar films
available to combat this problem, so you can choose a solar film that
suits your needs. Solar films offer exceptional performance and a very
appealing look to your building.
Large windows in an office environment increase glare, the bigger the
window, the more glare your employees will have to deal with. This
Glare is increase at curtain time of the day making it impossible to be
productive without having solar film installed to reduce it. Solar film
can reduce glare by up to 85%, depending on the solar film installed.
The protection you get from solar film will slash the heating and
cooling cost of the building and enhance the view, while reducing the
harmful ultra violet rays and glare, improving the functionality of your
windows. This means lower electricity bills, enhanced comfort, privacy
and protection against the unexpected!
Solar Film – Home Environments
Your home is your biggest investment. Solar film can help protect
that investment by reducing heating and cooling costs, adding protection
for your family against broken glass and smash and grab attacks, adding

Aerolite vs Isotherm
Aerolite vs Isotherm (R-values)
Think Pink Aerolite R-value thickness table
Isotherm Ceiling insulation thickness table
The Technical Information on R-values (Aerolite and Isotherm)
- R-value = Thickness of the material
- K-value= Its Thermal Conductivity
A sample of the product will be produced by the manufacturer at a stated density (weight) and will be sent to the laboratory for testing. What needs to be achieved here, is a low K-value (thermal conductivity). The product needs to be a bad conductor of heat flow.
Once the results come back for the k-value, the R-value can measured effectively, example:
A 50mm blanket that has a tested K-value of 0.046:
Thickness 0.05/ K-value 0.046 = 1.08 R-value
As long as the same thickness is used by the manufacturer in his range at the same density as the submitted sample, he can use the same K-value and formula to determin the R-values.
A 100mm blanket example:
Thickness 0.1 / Tested K-value 0.046 = R-value 2.17
The determined R-value’s in the above examples are the product R-value. Remember that the ceiling and roof tiles as well as other roofing materials also have a small insulating affect. So the total R-value of both the insulation materials and the roofing materials must be considered. If you have a 2.17 R-value from the insulation material, and a 0.53 R-value from the roofing materials, you get a total R-value of 2.7.
Visit (TIASA) for more info Total R-values.

Reflective insulation and bulk insulation
Reflective Insulation and Bulk Insulation
Conducted and Convected heat is mainly resisted by bulk ceiling insulation, which traps the heat in pockets within its structure. Thermal resistance is really the same, doesn't really matter which way the heat flows through it. Reflective insulation and bulk insulation are the two types of insulation on the market. The two leading bulk insulations on the market are glasswool insulation (think pink aerolite) and isotherm ceiling insulation. Bulk materials come with a material R-value for the thickness you require.
Reflective Insulation
Insulations with reflective properties are used to resist radiant heat flow, this is because of its high reflectivity and it also has low emissivity (ability to re-radiate heat). Reflective insulation relies on a 25mm layer of air next to the shiny surface. Heat flow through the product changes, depending on which way the heat is flowing through the product.Reflective insulation is an aluminum foil (shiny) laminated to plastic or paper and comes in long rolls. When dust settles on the reflective surface it slowly starts to reduce its performance. Always face the reflective surfaces downwards or keep them vertical. With single sided foil the anti glare surface should always face outwards or upwards.
Reflective insulation R-values are supplied as up and down values. Depending on where and how the reflective insulation is installed will change the products total R-value. Make sure system values given by the manufacturer relate to your situation.
- 45% on cooling and heating energy can be saved with roof and ceiling insulation
- 20% additional cooling and heating energy with wall bulk insulation
- 5% on winter costs with the right floor insulation used on your home
Ceiling Insulation
Ceiling Insulation - Aerolite and Isotherm
Ceiling insulation acts as a heat flow barrier and is needed to keep your house cool in summer and warm in winter. A well designed and well insulated home, gives you all year round comfort, slashing cooling and heating bills by nearly half. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions.Another thing that influences the appropriate level of ceiling insulation is climatic conditions. What needs to be established is if the ceiling insulation is needed to keep the heat out or in or both. Ceiling insulation needs to cater for daily temperature variations as well as seasonal.
Using design techniques with ceiling insulation is also important. If ceiling insulation is installed in a house that is not properly shaded or does not have thick curtains to block out the morning or afternoon sunlight, heat can build up and the ceiling insulation can have a reverse affect and create an oven affect.
Ceiling insulation can also eliminate moisture problems (condensation) and assist with weatherproofing. Ceiling insulation like think pink aerolite and isotherm also have excellent soundproofing qualities. The best time to get ceiling insulation installed is during construction, that’s why they have implemented the new sans 10400-xa building law.
- The total R-values for ceilings, floors and roofs gives you small thermal resistance, but it is definitely not adequate to be in compliance with the new energy efficiency law sans 10400-xa
- Under the sans 10400-xa, r-values needed to be achieved vary depending on your climatic zone
Choosing Ceiling Insulation
There are two main categories for ceiling insulation – reflective or bulk insulation. These two insulations are often combine for an even greater effect. Factorylite and isofoil are examples of bulk ceiling insulation combined with reflective foils. If you are comparing the ability of the product to insulate, you need to look at the products r-value, which measures its ability to resist heat flow. A higher r-value means a better level of insulation from the product.

Geyser Blankets and Pipe Insulation
Geyser Blanket and Pipe Insulation
Water in your geyser is constantly being reheated, if your geyser is not insulated properly, with a noticeable increase in your daily electricity usage. Geysers are known for their high energy consumption, and are responsible for more than half of a household’s monthly electricity bill.
Geysers alone use about 45% of your homes monthly electricity bill and geyser inlet and outlet pipes are responsible for around 13% of the cost. Installing a geyser blanket and insulating your hot water pipes with think pink aerolite or isotherm insulation is an efficient solution is to minimize thermal energy loss.
We have different kinds of geyser blankets depending on what you are looking for. If your geyser is in the roof, a layer of 100mm think pink aerolite or isotherm is what we recommend. For geysers that are outdoors or exposed to the elements, you need a geyser blanket with an outer layer of foil to protect the insulation, in these case’s we suggest a sisalation or alububble geyser blanket with your choice of either aerolite or isotherm on the interior.
Geyser energy-saving tips:
- Adjust your thermostat setting between 45 and 55 degrees C
- Switch your geyser off before leaving to go away
- Don’t bath, rather shower
- Make sure that all taps are properly closed, especially hot water taps
- Check and replace the geyser’s sacrificial anode on a regular basis
Pipe Insulation
Hot water pipes leading out of the geyser should also have a layer of insulation wrapped around them. Starting at the geyser and insulate at least 3-5m of all hot water pipes leading away from the geyser.
