Ceiling Insulation

Ceiling Insulation - Aerolite and Isotherm

Ceiling insulation acts as a heat flow barrier and is needed to keep your house cool in summer and warm in winter. A well designed and well insulated home, gives you all year round comfort, slashing cooling and heating bills by nearly half. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Another thing that influences the appropriate level of ceiling insulation is climatic conditions. What needs to be established is if the ceiling insulation is needed to keep the heat out or in or both. Ceiling insulation needs to cater for daily temperature variations as well as seasonal.
Using design techniques with ceiling insulation is also important. If ceiling insulation is installed in a house that is not properly shaded or does not have thick curtains to block out the morning or afternoon sunlight, heat can build up and the ceiling insulation can have a reverse affect and create an oven affect.
Ceiling insulation can also eliminate moisture problems (condensation) and assist with weatherproofing. Ceiling insulation like think pink aerolite and isotherm also have excellent soundproofing qualities. The best time to get ceiling insulation installed is during construction, that’s why they have implemented the new sans 10400-xa building law.

  • The total R-values for ceilings, floors and roofs gives you small thermal resistance, but it is definitely not adequate to be in compliance with the new energy efficiency law sans 10400-xa
  • Under the sans 10400-xa, r-values needed to be achieved vary depending on your climatic zone

Choosing Ceiling Insulation

There are two main categories for ceiling insulation – reflective or bulk insulation. These two insulations are often combine for an even greater effect. Factorylite and isofoil are examples of bulk ceiling insulation combined with reflective foils.

If you are comparing the ability of the product to insulate, you need to look at the products r-value, which measures its ability to resist heat flow. A higher r-value means a better level of insulation from the product.
